To me art is about breaking rules. Finding one’s own voice in whatever medium that becomes your tool, making your own rules and breaking out.
In search for that voice I have listened to the voices of other searchers from Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Riviera, Picasso, Goya, Klimt, Kandinsky and on and on…. I have learned from listening, but I have to speak out also.
Over time I have "dabbled" in various subjects and styles. I find that something in the work must be breathing, something with a soul…for now!..... I want to breathe heart and soul into each piece.

Stan Gilbert, artist and sculptor, earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from The Newark College of Engineering and worked in the Aerospace Industry before changing paths. Stan’s love of art and interest in artists started in New Jersey when he and his wife, Ruth, opened the ‘Hand and I Gallery’ exhibiting the work of local and New York artists and craftspeople as well as Stan’s silver jewelry. At this time Stan also found expression in poetry and was published in several poetry publications.
In 1972 the Gilbert's moved from New Jersey to West Rupert, Vermont. The inspiration from living the Vermont lifestyle influenced Stan to further explore his artistic interests. In 1998 he decided to ‘formalize’ his art education and studied with artist-teacher Linda Novick who has become a valued teacher and mentor over the years.
Stan continued his studies during winter trips to Mexico at the Instituto de Allende and the Belles Artes in San Miguel de Allende. In 1990, with the encouragement of Jean Hastings, former Director of the Art Department of Pineland College in North Carolina, Stan began experimenting with clay as a way to enhance his understanding of the three dimensional form in portraiture. Stan became enamored with sculpture and furthered his studies in stone sculpture with Robert Birbeck and mold making with David Wheeler and Jim Cole in the U.S. Returning to San Miguel de Allende, Stan continued his study of sculpture with Rangel Gomez and Jesus Mendez. Stan’s love of experimentation has led him to work in clay, plaster, marble, limestone, sandstone, fiberglass and bronze.
Gilbert’s style in both painting and sculpture is figurative expressionism, although abstract elements appear more often in his sculpture. His connection with people and place is seen clearly in his work. His love of travel and his love for Vermont and Mexico provide endless inspiration for his artistic vision and his sculptor’s hand.
